Alison Meharg - Offspring
Growing up, I had two prominent hobbies: hanging out with family and looking for items to add to my miniature collection. I have always been a family person. I have also always been intrigued by odd sized items. I think part of my love for miniatures comes from fond memories of me using kid sized toys, but I also think I am fascinated by the idea of size not being a determinant of function. Photography plays a prominent role in how we understand scale. We often use other objects that we are familiar with in a photograph as reference to determine the scale.
For the creation my project Offspring, I wanted to somehow photographically display my love for miniatures and my connection to family. In each photograph you see the parent with their child/The parent is the normal sized object and the child is the miniature object. I wanted to show their relationship and how even though the miniature object is small, it still serves a specific and necessary function. I shot all of these relationships on colorful backgrounds to bring the viewer back to their childhood where everything was a bright primary color
