Sammi Ledbetter - Playtime
Every artist in my belief has times where they start to resent or lose interest in what they do. Taking two to four art classes every school year for the last eight years has pushed me to a point of not knowing how to create without being handed a prompt. Creating this series has been a challenge for me in that I had to create what I found to be an innovative and intriguing idea on my own. That came with a lot of pressure and frustration that led to me wanting to just have absolute fun with creating again. The first thing I thought of was those books we had as children where the pages were segmented into thirds and you can dress the model up in mismatching outfit ideas. The random and colorful quality that those had inspired me to create a series surrounding the idea of playing with shapes and colors to ignite some nostalgic playtime fun.
This combination of photography and screen-printing feature such shapes and colors I heavily identify with that I sense as I produce work. The placement of the shape variety and color palettes are all particular to each image but relate to the others. All the color choices and the shapes aesthetically correlate and are interpreted from the person in the image as well as being a representation of myself.
