Bio

Sara Haines holds a deep appreciation for silly stories and bold illustration. Based in Seattle, WA, she has fond childhood memories of carefully opening creaking-paper Christmas stories and pop-up ABC books, marveling how they seem to levitate out of the page. She continues to illustrate both flat and pop-up pieces.

Artist Statement

These pieces are part of the pop-up story “Gerb” about an unfortunate toad. My goal is firstly to tell a ridiculous story, and second, I want the viewer to glance at the pop-up a second time and notice something there they hadn’t seen before. Is that a hidden monster crouching in the bushes? Does the grass move, or the clouds evaporate suddenly? The magic of pop-ups lies not just in their charm of illustration but through in their little surprises, their hidden tricks and feats of engineering that prompt the question “how did they do that?” I want to pass on that experience, whether it be someone's first pop-up or their thousandth.
